Designing on Graph Paper

by Mark E Malachowski

In this demo I will share:

  • How I use graph paper to sketch and draw a batik egg design.
  • How to refine a rough sketch into a complete drawing that can then be transferred onto an egg (using a grid on the egg and dividing into 4th (16th) or 3rd (12th) to create a repeating pattern.
  • How to utilize the grid on the graph paper to create curves, circles, organic and geometric shapes incorporating these shapes into various patterns to create a complete and harmonious pysanka – batik egg design.
  • Share some drawing tips to keep the creative process flowing.
  • Finding inspiration for your designs in nature and random manmade objects.
  • Participants in this demo will be encouraged to challenge themselves and experiment with this method of drawing their own designs and to practice using the graph paper and grid division on the egg.

Cost: $10 CAD per person 10 participants

          About me:

I am an artist and consider myself a painter but, like to explore and experiment with other mediums. I have been designing my batik eggs since 2002 and been hosting weekend Batik Egg Workshops in Cleveland for many years. Recently I’ve taken my workshops on the road with a couple “Pop Up Batik Egg Workshops”.

In October 2020 I will be hosting along with Linda Hupert the first annual “Pysanky On The River” batik egg event in Cleveland, Ohio.
