Workshop summary:
In this hands-on workshop, you will complete a pysanka with a Motanka written on it. You will develop techniques in designing your own Motanka by creating unique costumes to personalize your pysanka. Participants will learn how to divide a dyed brown egg to create a Motanka pysanka, and they will also learn how to wash back to white and then continue with the dye process to complete the pysanka.
The Motanka Pysanka design featured in this class has a special story within our community. The original design put on an egg was created by Rosemary Baker of New Jersey, who drew inspiration from the cover of the book "Pysanky of Chernihiv Region" by A.P. Sementsov. We’re proud to celebrate Rosemary’s contribution and recognize how our art is often a tapestry woven from many sources. In our community, we like it when inspiration flows freely—artists build on each other’s ideas, interpret designs in new ways, and shape their own visions. Maria Zdaniw embraced this vision by transforming Rosemary’s Berehenia design into a Motanka Pysanka, adding some extra Ukrainian touches while honouring the roots of the original. This spirit of sharing, adaptation, and creative evolution is at the heart of what we do, and we’re grateful for the connections and inspiration that bring us together.

About Maria:
I started writing pysanky over 30 years ago. My first encounter with pysanky was when I took my children to Ukrainian school. I then fell in love with the art and taught myself how to write pysanky. I continue to learn and master new techniques by attending all the UE retreats. I then started teaching in the past few years at the church to Ukrainian newcomers, and to the Ukrainian Seniors Center, the Ukrainian museum, and now at the UE retreats. I have written pysanky from quail to ostrich and everything in between.
