Workshop Summary

Explore the beauty of simplicity in this hands-on workshop focused on the monochromatic color scheme. Under Mark E. Malachowski’s guidance, you’ll learn how to create a complete and visually striking pysanka or batik egg using just a single dye color. This class is perfect for artists who appreciate the subtle power of tone, gradation, and harmony.

What You’ll Learn:

  • How to use a single color dye to achieve depth and dimension on your pysanka or batik egg
  • Techniques for blending and fading dye using brushes, water, and vinegar to create smooth transitions from dark to light
  • Color mixing with a brush to create variations in saturation—all within one color family
  • Several blending methods for achieving a polished, monochromatic effect

About Mark:

I am an artist at heart and consider myself a painter, though my creative journey is guided by curiosity and a love of experimentation across many mediums. Since 2002, I have been designing batik eggs, a practice that has become both a passion and a meaningful way to connect with others through art.
For many years, I’ve hosted weekend Batik Egg Workshops in Cleveland, sharing this traditional art form with beginners and experienced artists alike. More recently, I’ve taken these workshops on the road, offering “Pop Up Batik Egg Workshops” that bring the joy of pysanky to new communities.
In October 2025, we proudly celebrated the 5th anniversary of Pysanky On The River in Cleveland, Ohio—a milestone that reflects the incredible support and creativity of our growing community. With gratitude and excitement, we’re now looking ahead to hosting POTR26 and continuing to celebrate art, tradition, and connection.
