#01 - Kosiv Pysanky - Nadia Gennings - Tuesday July 21st 1:00pm - 3:00pm

Workshop Summary:

In this hands-on workshop, you will learn how to interpret/adapt patterns from Kosiv pottery onto a pysanka. Kosiv pottery is a distinct style with 3 distinct colours, primarily used being gold, a dark brown, and a particular green. By using a pre-dyed brown turkey egg and an instructional handout, you will be able to create your very own Kosiv pysanka.

We will also discuss using other eggs (natural brown eggs) to create and experiment writing Kosiv pysanky and discuss which elements of Kosiv design work best on a pysanka.

What's provided:

  • a turkey egg that has been dyed brown

  • an instructional handout to create a Kosiv pysanka and additional inspiration

What to bring:

  • a white pencil to draw on the brown egg

  • a tape measure

  • a medium kistka

  • white beeswax or a color you will be able to see on a dark background

  • a micro brush, or small paintbrush, to apply dye to certain areas (spot dye)

Instructor Bio:

I am a first-generation Ukrainian Canadian. Both of my parents emigrated to Canada after WWII. After seeing some women in my church making pysanky 55+ years ago, I told my father I wanted to do that. He made me my first kistka, and I taught myself through trial and error with the limited information that was available back in the 60's. I continue to learn and expand my knowledge, creating new divisions, new styles, and learning new techniques. I have also taught myself the scratch technique called Drapanka and make those eggs also.
