#17. Lystovky: Botanical Onion Skin Eggs - Nada & Kathy - Wednesday July 22nd - 3:30PM to 5:30PM

Workshop Summary

(Листовки з лушпиння цибулі)

Experience the beauty of Ukrainian tradition with “lystovky”—eggs naturally dyed with onion skins and decorated using leaves and botanicals. This workshop celebrates the earthy, organic process of creating golden-hued eggs with delicate leaf patterns, a beloved custom especially at Easter in Ukraine. Lystovky are meant to be eaten and are often included in Easter baskets, symbolizing renewal, nature, and the joy of spring.

You’ll learn the history and cultural significance of lystovky, then dive hands-on into the process of preparing, wrapping, and dyeing eggs with onion skins and natural botanicals. About Nada Rose & Kathy Verrelli:
Sometimes the best collaborations start with a simple phone call. Nada Rose, a customer living just north of Kathy, isn’t big on ordering online—so when she needed a fine electric kistka, she decided to pick up the phone and call Kathy directly. One thing led to another, and soon Nada was stopping by in person to collect her new kistka.

Their connection grew at the April 1st “Pysanky For Ukraine” day, where Nada showed up with all her Lystovky supplies, eager to share the tradition of onion skin egg dyeing using botanicals to give some design to the eggs. What started as a casual gathering turned into a joyful, hands-on experience—Kathy, her friends, and family spent the day making beautiful Lystovky together, like many Ukrainians do during Easter, thanks to Nada’s generosity and enthusiasm.

This year, when an instructor had to cancel, Kathy knew exactly who to call. She invited Nada to join her in offering this super fun and meaningful workshop, so that even more people could experience the magic of lystovky. So here we are—come join us and be part of the tradition!
